NORWAY - Constance "Connie" Kauwalu, 89, of Norway, died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012, at Maryhill Manor in Niagara, Wis.
She was born on May 2, 1923, in Norway, the daughter of the late Frank and Mary (Zanon) Schunk of Waucedah.
Connie was a graduate of Northern Michigan College.
Connie began teaching in Michigan then put her teaching career on hold to raise her family and follow her husband's military assignments which included the Caribbean, France, and Germany. Later she resumed her teaching in Florida, Louisiana, and Georgia where she completed her master's degree in sociology.
Her special education certification took her to Hawaii where she instituted the Hawaiian Special Education Department and where she met her husband, Levi Kauwalu.
After Levi preceded her in death, Connie returned to Vulcan and later Norway, ultimately entering Maryhill Manor in Niagara, Wis. where she resided for six years until her death.
Connie enjoyed literature, history, politics, and a good bridge game.
She is survived by seven children, Frank, Daniel, Timothy, Terry, Eileen, Patrick, and Barbara; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren; and sisters, Frances (Mark) Rehrauer of Henderson, Nev., and Stephanie Schunk of Norway.
She was preceded in death by husbands John D. Callahan and Levi Kauwalu.
Family will greet friends on Friday, Oct. 12, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church in Norway.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated on Friday at 11 a.m. at the church with Fr. Timothy Ekaitis presiding.
Interment will follow at the Norway Township Cemetery.
