Ridiculous and sickening

October 11, 2012
The Daily News

The new unemployment figures were released Friday, Oct. 5 and there was a substantial drop in the unemployment rate from 8.1 percent to 7.8 percent.

Of course a number of political right-wing pundits are claiming that the numbers are being falsified so the president is re-elected.

So basically what they are saying is that when the unemployment rate actually increased a few months ago the president had nothing to do with it but not now with the magic wave of a wand he has complete control over the numbers and that is why they lowered.

Jack Welch, who is always admired until now, went so far as to claim it is the president's Chicago gang who are behind the numbers.

I find such claims ridiculous and sickening. Even Keith Hall, the former Chief of Labor Statistics who is a Republican and was appointed by George W. Bush, stated, "To think these numbers could be manipulated, it's impossible to do it and get away with it. These numbers are very trustworthy."

Just once I would like to see someone who has always opposed the president have the guts to stand up and say, "These numbers are a positive sign for this country and let's hope this trend continues."

Side note: Harry Truman, who never saw eye-to-eye with General MacArthur, stated after MacArthur's victory at lnchon during the Korean War. "I'll be the first to say it; he did a hell of a job."

Where has such candor gone?
