WAKEFIELD - Forest Park allowed 38 unanswered points and bowed to Gogebic 46-15 in Great Western Conference football Saturday.

Coach Bill Santilli's Trojans, with Derek Aberly scoring a pair of touchdowns, held a 15-8 lead in the second quarter.

Trojan turnovers and penalties triggered the Miners (5-2 overall, 4-1 GWC), who clinched at least a share of the conference crown. Forest Park (6-2, 3-1) can also tie for the league title by beating Lake Linden on Friday at Dick Mettlach Field.

"First half penalties killed our ability to stay within our gameplan," Santilli said. "Nine penalties against a team of average quality, yet alone a very good team like Gogebic, is a difficult challenge to recover from."

Aberly ran three yards and caught an 11-yard pass from Jeff Johnson for the Trojan scores.

He also blocked a punt near the end of the first half, but with just 20 seconds left and no timeouts, the Trojans couldn't cash in. Johnson was picked off in the endzone.

Gogebic picked off three passes in all - one by Caleb Winkler covering 85 yards in the fourth quarter.

Winkler also ran 33 and 50 yards from scrimmage for touchdowns.

"Gogebic took control in the second half," Santilli said. "We just couldn't catch a break, and offensively we faultered by earning only one first down in the thid quarter."

Aberly led the Trojans with 104 yards on 22 carries. Johnson completed 9-of-20 for 102 yards, hitting Brett Hietala three times for 31 yards.

Aberly's nine tackles led Forest Park. He also combined with Johnson for a sack. Colton LaChapelle, Taylor Nocerini, Dennis Mongar and Adam Hilberg added tackles for loss.

"Gogebic had a stong and well-balanced team," Santilli noted. "They were clearly the better team today.

"I am still very pleased to be 6-2 on the season. We need to finish strong in Week 9.
