MARQUETTE - Kingsford, under first-year head coach Mandie Meyer, captured the Great Northern Conference volleyball title here Thursday night, downing Marquette 3-1.

The Flivvers improved to 9-0 in league play.

"It was a battle and we were able to take home the win," Meyer said. "Both times we've played Marquette it hasn't been a walk in the park. They were both very high energy, competitive matches."

Margo Wittenbach led the Flivvers with 15 kills. Carlee Benzie added 13 more, while Andrea Roell knocked down six kills. Lauren Smith (4 kills), Brooke Sanford (2 kills) and Lillian Slajus (1 kill) also contributed.

Benzie led the defensive effort.

"She has that drive, that competitor in her that does not want to lose and you can see that in her play and hustle," Meyer said. "Lauren Smith played out of her mind tonight with six block solos."

The Flivvers host Forest Park Tuesday before wrapping up the regular season with a home match against Gladstone Thursday.
