ISHPEMING - Iron Mountain secured its second straight Mid-Peninsula Conference title with a 25-16, 25-22, 24-26, 25-21 victory over Ishpeming.
The Mountaineers, now 10-1 in league matches, have won the conference title every season but one since 2004.
"It's been a tough conference," Mountaineers coach Jeanne Newberry said. "Every team has their own strong points, and anyone can beat anyone. It all comes down to the strength of your bench, and I'm lucky enough to have a strong bench.
"I have good athletes - I'm always fortunate to have good athletes - but they also have a determination to win. It's the pride of winning, their competitiveness, and they help each other out. Our squad supports each other on and off the court."
Against Ishpeming, the Mountaineers were led by Sarah Girard (13 kills) and Maria Pirkola (11 kills). Abby Gerhard added 13 digs, while Kari Sanford and Girard added 12 more.
"I tried to move my sets around and get to everyone I could," said senior setter Katelynn Johnson, who finished with 20 assists.
Iron Mountain had to adjust to Ishpeming's tipping game Thursday night.
"They had a very good tipping team, tipping it right over our blockers," Newberry said. "We had a hard time adjusting to who was doing the blocking. Their strongest hitter was also their best tipper, and she played a smart game. Our job was to try to keep her in the back row."
Other keys for the Mountaineers in the match included good coverage on their hits, positive serving and an improved serve receive from Tuesday's match.
"We are proud to claim the MPC title and look forward to tournaments," freshmen libber Susie Hagan said. "We have supportive seniors, and we will miss them."
The Mountaineers took the jayvee match 25-7, 25-23, 15-8.
