Will help save money

October 20, 2012
The Daily News

EDITOR:

As a concerned citizen and a dedicated board member of the Norway-Vulcan Area Schools, I am staunchly supporting the Norway-Vulcan Area Schools Bond Proposal. The passing of this bond will allow for numerous improvements that are long overdue.

And no, a yes vote will not, will not, increase the taxes assessed to property owners. Most importantly, the health, safety, security and instructional delivery system will be brought into the standards of the 21st century.

Some of the necessary improvements within this bond include the replacement of the original gymnasium floor, which will allow for a favorable surface that will reduce injuries for the athletes. Additionally, the existing bleachers are dangerous because of the gaps, especially for children and seniors. New bleachers will have lower rises in the steps to ease climbing and minimize the overall height, thus allowing for safer seating.

The bond also includes roof repairs to re-shingle areas, which will eliminate the water damage that continues to plague the building. The washrooms, particularly the worn fixtures, will be upgraded. The chemistry lab will also be upgraded to meet current health and safety standards.

Another issue addressed by the bond is building security, which will be enhanced by adding pass-key style locks and replacement of damaged doors.

More efficient lighting will be added throughout the building, which will significantly reduce the cost of electricity.

Improvements in technology via district-supplied electronic tablet devices will save on printing costs and allow for textbooks to be more transportable and updated on a regular basis. This will allow all students, regardless of their economic means, to access global, web-based resources, thus preparing them for the modern workplace and the challenges of the 21st century.

These improvements will help save money in the long run, educate students in a competitive manner, and serve the community for many years to come. A "yes" vote on the Norway-Vulcan Area Schools Bond Proposal will assure a more successful future for our children. Please remember them and vote "yes" on Nov. 6.
