October 22, 2012
The Daily News

IRON MOUNTAIN - The Dickinson County Prosecutor's Office would like to warn residents about a scam in the area.

Prosecutor Stephanie Brule said that an elderly Dickinson County resident received a phone call from an individual claiming to be from Microsoft.

The caller said that the elderly resident's computer was going to crash within hours, and the only way to prevent the crash was to purchase security software for hundreds of dollars.

In addition, the caller asked for credit card information for the software purchase. The caller was also able to convince the elderly resident to allow remote access to the computer under the guise of showing the resident where the problem was.
