Where the business goes

October 29, 2012
The Daily News

EDITOR:

WE Electric notes payers in the western Upper Peninsula pay more for electricity than the rest of the state. This is because we are paying for a new coal-fired power plant in Milwaukee which is owned by WE Energy, our supplier. This is in spite of the fact that our local power sources are hydro.

Proposition 3 will force the utilities to move in the direction of renewable energy which will improve public health and give us cleaner air and water. That is why it is supported by the Michigan Nurses Association.

It will also create 94,000 Michigan jobs that can't be outsourced, backing $10.3 billion in new investments. It will also reduce the $1.7 billion a year Michigan spends on importing coal from other states.

Thirty other states have higher renewable energy standards and that's where the business goes.
