PEMBINE, Wis. - Goodman-Pembine, under new boys basketball coach Paul Whitt, begins the season Friday at Wausaukee.

The Patriots return two starters in 6-foot-7 senior center Brennan Pierquet and junior guard Trent Heath. Pierquet averaged 13 points per game and Heath added 11.9.

Roman Grebin also lettered last year for the Patriots, who graduated two offensive sources in Austin Lorenz (10.9 ppg) and Zac Sprejda (9.8).

Alex Whitt, a 6-foot-4 sophomore, and Jacob Garrelts averaged points in double figures on the jayvee team.

GP's size, experience and guard play stand out, according to the new coach. Installing a new system may take time.

Whitt coached Northland International University women's basketball for seven seasons.

"I stepped down from that volunteer position in March because of the demands on my time and the inability to see my son (Alex) play jayvee for Goodman-Pembine," Whitt said. "We also have a daughter who is entering her senior year at Pembine and wanted to make sure I got to enjoy her final year with her."

The Patriots basketball post opened up about two months after Whitt left Pioneer women's basketball.

"I took it as a gift from God," Whitt, Northland camp director, said of the job opening. "My goals are to help these young men be better family members, students, members in their community and basketball players.

"I'm more interested in who they are off the court than on. However having the ability to play the game of basketball is a stewardship, so we are going to always strive to do our best and get better.

"Athletically, we will focus on what we can control effort, attitude and focus. We'll measure our success on how we control those things, because those transcend basketball."

GP visits Niagara on Monday and launches the Northern Lakes Conference season Tuesday, Dec. 4, at Pembine

Patriots girls basketball season starts Saturday night at Wausaukee.

Patriots boys basketball roster follows:

SENIOR - Alex Gardner, Shaun Seeley, Roman Grebin, Cody Metras, Brennan Pierquet.

JUNIOR - Jacob Garrelts, Trent Heath.

SOPHOMORE - Mike Bruce, Randall Bose, Alex Whitt.
