KINGSFORD - As the Kingsford girls basketball team takes the floor tonight at North Dickinson, they can now be referred to as a veteran squad.

The Flivvers, 8-13 last season with a 3-5 Great Northern Conference record, bring back six letter winners. That group includes four of the team's five starters from last year.

"I have been impressed with our veteran players and how much they are willing to help the players coming up from last year's jayvee," Flivvers head coach Mike Cross said.

While the Flivvers lost a few to graduation, including starter Libby DeClark, starters Courtney Qualley, Samantha Flemming, Andrea Roell and Carlee Benzie return.

Benzie was selected to the All-U.P. second team and All-Great Northern Conference first team. Qualley, a sophomore, and Roell were all-league honorable mentions.

The Flivvers' roster of 10 players includes three seniors, five juniors and two sophomores.

"I really enjoy working with this group of girls," Cross said. "Each and every practice we are getting better and working hard. Each of these players has a great attitude and that is huge when trying to put together a solid team."

Cross believes strength and quickness will be among the Flivvers' greatest assets this season.

"We need to be a better defensive team and rebounding team," he said. "Both take commitment, hard work and desire and I feel this group of girls is very capable of being a really good defensive team."

John Lorenzoni, interim for Mark Pugh, guides the jayvee squad, while Terry Youren leads the freshmen.

Kingsford's first home game is set for Friday against Westwood.

Roster follows:

SENIORS - Samantha Flemming, Carlee Benzie, Andrea Roell.

JUNIORS - Anna Shanks, Hannah Tresedder, Santina Bianco, Lauren Smith, Kelsey Bennett,

SOPHOMORES - Amber Larson, Courtney Qualley.
