CRYSTAL FALLS - Lexi Gussert scored 41 points as Forest Park fought back from a 13-point halftime deficit to defeat Bark River 63-57 in Skyline Conference girls basketball Friday.

Gussert scored 24 points in the second half, including three treys in the third quarter, as the Trojans overcame the Broncos' 37-24 halftime advantage.

"We're a very young team," said Forest Park coach Jeff Syrjanen. "We started losing it to the pressure," he said of the Trojans' slow start.

Forest Park went on a 23-7 run through the third frame to take a three-point lead into the fourth.

Syrjanen credited the turnaround to tougher defense, Gussert's leadership and improved guard play. "We never quit," he said. "It was a total team effort."

Forest Park sophomore Sierra Robarge finished with 10 points and Jessica Bawyn scored five of her six in the fourth quarter, draining three of four free throws.

The Broncos were led by Sarah Madalinski's 31 points.

"It really was a Gussert-Madalinski show out there for a while," Syrjanen said.

Gussert, who had five threes overall, dodged heavy defensive pressure to go both inside and outside for her points.

"Her footwork is so tremendous," Syrjanen said of the U.P. Dream Team junior, the Trojans' only returning starter.

Forest Park also captured the jayvee game.

The Trojans (2-0) travel to Carney on Tuesday.
