IRON RIVER - West Iron County, keyed by a 9-0 run in the second quarter, knocked off Westwood 64-54 in a non-conference boys basketball opener Monday at Charles Greenlund Gymnasium.
Coach Dan Schive said it was the first time in 18 years that the Wykons beat the Patriots.
West Iron held a 19-17 edge after the first quarter and checked Westwood to four points in the second stanza.
"The first quarter was run and shoot," Schive said. "We settled down quite a bit in the second quarter. We switched defenses in the second quarter and started to buckle down."
The Wykons, with a 30-21 halftime lead, outscored the Patriots 34-33 in the second half.
"It was pretty much they would go on a run and we would go on a run," Schive said of the second half. "All in all, it was a war of attrition."
Adam Newby sparked the Wykons with 18 points. Austin Waara tallied 13 points and eight assists. Andy Ridolphi registered 11 points and 11 rebounds. Brock Hopkins topped the Wykons in boards with 13.
West Iron hosts Forest Park on Tuesday, Dec. 11.
Westwood won the junior varsity game.
