Need to match

December 4, 2012

Dickinson County is once again seeking millage to upgrade the 911 dispatch system.

I think I know the main reason it was voted down in November, and I think the county board needs to address it if they want the millage to pass this time.

The numbers just don't add up. Between August and November, the amount needed to replace the aging console has been reported as various amounts between $300,000 and $390,000.

I believe the millage would have passed if it was expected to raise $375,000 in one single year. But it is estimated that the county will receive approximately that amount for three years in a row.

Why are they asking for three times the amount that is needed? This needs to be better explained to the voters if the millage is to pass. Our dispatch center provides a priceless service, and we should certainly provide what is needed, but the numbers need to match.
