IRON MOUNTAIN - A Sagola man has been sentenced to eight months in the Dickinson County Jail for one count of criminal sexual conduct, fourth degree.

Attorney Grant Carlson of Iron Mountain said his client, David Alan Steppig, 22, acknowledged what he did and did not make any excuses.

"He is not proud or pleased of his actions. He engaged in decision-making less than exemplary," Carlson said.

Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Lisa Richards said Steppig chose to provide alcohol for and have relations with a 15-year-old girl. She added he then denied the story to police and was untruthful to the probation agent.

Richards added he lacked remorse for his behavior.

According to the felony complaint, the incident occurred on Dec. 31, 2011.

At sentencing, Steppig said he was sorry.

Judge Mary B. Barglind said the victim was not legally able to consent to sex in the state of Michigan.

"You took advantage of this child. A sentence consistent with guidelines is appropriate," she said.

Steppig was sentenced to two years probation and eight months in jail for one count of criminal sexual conduct, fourth degree.

His previous Holmes Youthful Trainee Act status was revoked.
