MANISTIQUE - Iron Mountain cooled off after a fast start and bowed to Manistique 38-35 in Mid-Peninsula Conference girls basketball Friday.

"We got off to a great start and then Manistique changed defenses," Mountaineers coach John Hogberg said. "We couldn't hit our shots."

The Mountaineers claimed a 21-20 halftime lead but the Emeralds pulled ahead 28-25 after three quarters.

Manistique, behind point guard Kyra Lauzon's game-high 18 points, owned a 36-28 lead late in the game. Lauzon hit eight of nine from the free throw line and added seven rebounds.

Iron Mountain rallied to within 36-32 as Sarah Pirkola popped in five of her team-high 11 points.

A Pirkola triple closed the gap to 38-35 with 11 seconds to go. The Mountaineers misfired on another scoring attempt with six seconds left.

Freshman Katie Brule, called up for this varsity game with the frosh team not playing, tallied eight Mountaineer points. All-U.P. guard Katelynn Johnson netted five points in her season debut.

"Katelynn played really well and looked pretty good," Hogberg said of the senior who injured her wrist during the volleyball season. "It was good to have her on the floor."

The Mountaineers (0-6, 0-3) host Negaunee on Tuesday.

"We're 0-and-6 but it's not due to lack of effort," Hogberg said.

Manistique (1-4) broke into the win column.

"It was our first win, so it's obviously a good feeling for us," said Emeralds coach Kelly Spettel. "We played well down the stretch, and we were very disciplined on offense. We finally took better care of the basketball."

Spettel, calling Johnson one of the best players in the conference, said her girls did a good job of keeping her under wraps.

"(Johnson) can be absolutely deadly from the three-point line, and we shut her down tonight," she said. "We just really focused on making sure she didn't get any open looks."

Iron Mountain nipped Manistique 46-45 in the jayvee game.
