Super Dooper Yoopers bring home another victory

The Super Dooper Yoopers experienced a "very special evening" during last week's visit to see Tommy Izzo's Michigan State Spartans.

The Yoopers, a group from the Iron Mountain-Kingsford area, made their 14th bus journey to East Lansing. They have yet to see MSU lose, with Purdue (84-61) the latest victim in Tommy becoming the third winningest coach in Big Ten history behind Bobby Knight and Gene Keady.

The gracious Tommy, and his wife, Lupe, throw a party for the Yoopers at their home following the game. The guest list this year included the parents of former Spartan players.

"When we arrive, Tom has all the Yoopers line up on one side of the room and parents on the other," said Bob Furno, who coordinates the "Yoopers" with Dick Allen. "Tom explained that the Yoopers are folks that helped him get to where he is today and the parents are folks that have helped him stay there.

"This stands out among all we have been to in 14 years."

The Super Dooper Yoopers always appreciate the efforts of bus driver Mark Zenko, who "was as usual outstanding and who is a key player in making this work as well as it does." ...

David Larsen, a defensive leader for Norway High School's unbeaten football teams in 1975 and 1976, passed away this week. "He was probably the best defensive player l coached," Bob Giannunzio, Norway High School's Hall of Fame coach, said. "I designed our defense around him."

The area also lost Crystal Falls' Malcolm McNeil, a U.P. Hall of Fame promoter and among the all-time great nice people ...
