This is in response to a recent letter titled "Something to ponder."
I'm assuming that you want us to ponder the possibility that banning a certain type of gun would decrease the gun violence in America.
Do you truly believe that gun bans of any kind have a positive effect on reducing crime, preventing accidents, and reducing or preventing suicides? The assault weapon ban is another example of a law that only applies to the law-abiding.
As a crime fighting law, it does nothing. Criminals already have all the assault weapons they want. And, if they want more, they can buy them on the black market. If this law is enacted, the black market gun manufacturing industry will go through the roof. Take note how well the 'war on drugs' is working out. Criminals have a tendency not to obey laws.
Instead, we should be focusing our laws on criminals, and leave the responsible citizen alone, focusing on ways to curb violence and protect our innocent.
Our main concern should be that the innocent and defenseless will be protected everywhere in our nation. That should be our country's first priority. Plain and simple. Monsters like Adam Lanza will always find a way to commit violent crimes. Always.
Obama's obsessive gun control agenda is just another political game that the Democrats play, to make them appear to actually care about the American people, knowing full well it will do nothing to slow down the violent crime in this country.
Something else to ponder, Switzerland, where almost every adult male is legally required to possess a gun, is one of the few nations with a higher per capita rate of gun ownership than the United States and gun crime is virtually non-existent.
