North Dickinson’s Elizabeth Charlevoix drains a first-quarter shot Friday while being defended by Norway’s Leah Mattson (left) and Heather Evosevich at Carl F. Lemin Gymnasium. Charlevoix finished with a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds in the Nordics’ first victory of the season, 59-55.

Behind double-doubles from Elizabeth Charlevoix and Miranda Jacobson, the Nordics claimed their first win of the season with a 59-55 non-conference decision over Norway Friday night at Carl F. Lemin Gymnasium.

"The kids really came on," North Dickinson head coach Mike Roell said. "It was a great team effort. They handled the pressure well enough to win. There was great passing throughout the game, and everybody contributed down the stretch."

Charlevoix poured in 17 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, following up a 15-point effort against Forest Park earlier in the week.

Jacobson added 14 points with a game-high 15 rebounds.

"Charlevoix really had a big first quarter to keep us in the game," Roell said. "She had a great night. And Jacobson was strong on the boards."

Lexi Steele was a third Nordic to reach double figures, scoring 10 points. She busted a 44-44 tie early in the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer that put North Dickinson in front for good.

Norway, with Bailey Grayvold scoring 26 points, couldn't get any closer than a bucket after Steele's triple. Every time Norway threatened to tie, the Nordics found an answer.

It was a one-score game heading into the final minute when Charlevoix gave the Nordics a little breathing room by putting in a tough, off-balance lay-up.

Rachel Conery, scoring 12 for the Knights, quickly answered with a jumper. But with time winding down, the Knights were forced to foul on the next North Dickinson possession.

Jacobson found herself at the line with a chance to make it a four-point game again. She missed both but recovered her own shot and quickly put it back in for two with about 30 seconds to play.

Steele added another clutch free throw for the Nordics in the final seconds, and Norway simply couldn't hit on its end, despite several attempts during their last couple of possessions.

"Our defense has definitely been getting better," Roell said. "I've been noticing in practice we've been getting better, seems like we're taking it more serious."

Norway led by a basket after one quarter and looked to be headed to the halftime locker room with an even bigger lead. But the Nordics got a couple of big unanswered treys by Chelsey Stroud and Jacobson to knot the game 25-25 at the break.

As the third quarter progressed it became clear Norway was not going to be able to shake the Nordics.

Jacobson and Steele both converted difficult layups with free throws late in the frame, Steele's 3-point play put the Nordics up 40-38. An inside basket by Marissa Jauquet in the final half -minute allowed North Dickinson to head into the fourth with the lead.

Baskets by Grayvold and Leah Mattson early in the fourth brought Norway back to a 44-44 tie ahead of Steele's go-ahead trey.

"The girls are fired up," Roell said. "They deserve a win, and hopefully this will carry over. The confidence will help everybody out."

Norway slipped to 6-5 with the loss.

"I saw one girl that was wanting to play tonight," said frustrated Norway head coach Carli Kelly. "I don't know where everybody else was, in la-la land or a picnic in the park. They were not here tonight.

"We were weak by the basket. I don't know how many missed layups we had because we weren't going up strong."

Norway took the jayvee contest 60-35.
