IM’s Gauthier, Edwards U.P. mat champs again

MARQUETTE - Iron Mountain's Jared Gauthier added another U.P. wrestling title for the family.

The Mountaineer sophomore repeated as champion in the U.P. Invitational, giving the four Gauthier brothers nine career U.P. titles Saturday.

Gauthier blanked Rudyard's Jimmy Spencer 10-0 in the 119-pound finals. Spencer was undefeated. Gauthier, once-beaten on the season, posted three pins before the championship match.

"Gauthier dominated his match from start to finish," Mountaineers coach Brandon Rutter said. "He wrestled hard and he did not give Spencer an opportunity to score. He set the pace and had an answer for everything Spencer attempted to do. Gauthier wrestled his best match of the year and it was a great finals to watch."

The Mountaineers tallied another U.P. championship from Alex Edwards, who pinned Saint Ignace's Bill Bentgen in the 112-pound finals for his second U.P. title. Edwards advanced with pins in his first two matches Saturday.

"Alex controlled Bentgen pinning him in 3:20," Rutter said. "Alex had an excellent day all together, pinning his way through the tournament. Since making 112 at the Elks (Jan 5) he has been strong. Alex is quick on his feet, and it's impressive to watch how fast he moves out on the mat. Bentgen was unable to do much against Alex."

Iron Mountain finished seventh overall, despite filling only six weight brackets. Jacob Weslin (140) took fourth, and Corbin Henkel (130) added a fifth.

Weslin led in his match for third, but got caught in a headlock.

"Jacob was right there," Rutter said. "He made a mistake and got caught. Weslin keeps making improvements on the mat every week."

Rutter said Henkel's fifth-place match was his best match of the season.

"Corbin continues to impress," Rutter said. "He does not quit on mat and that has been the difference in many of his matches. He has had a lot of matches go six minutes this year, and that has made him better every single week. He has had a great season to this point.

"Overall, extremely happy with the entire team and their performances this weekend," Rutter said. "The team as a whole continues to work hard and it has been showing. The guys are peaking at the right time. As a coaching staff we are looking forward to the upcoming weeks. Conference and districts are right around the corner and I like the direction were are heading in."

Iron Mountain travels to Escanaba Tuesday for a quad also including Negaunee and Menominee.

Norway's Cayleb Winkler was edged by Escanaba's Zach Pribe 12-11 in the 125-pound championship. Zac DeCremer (103) and Donny Houle (119) added thirds for the Knights.

Taylor Bonetti (160) and Jake Rehn (171) placed fifth, and Tim Huddleston (112) and Jorden Neumann (171) both wound up sixth.

As a team, Norway placed sixth.

"I felt we wrestled well we were right behind some really good schools," Knights coach Nick Burklund said. "What really hurt us as a team was in the first round of wrestling our team had eight byes. Our wrestlers weren't able to get on the mat and get those much-needed first-round points. I believe that was the difference between fifth and sixth place.

"We had five medalists on the day which was great. The kids really put it into another gear. It was great to see them fight off their backs and come up with wins. It really showed how bad they wanted it."

Norway hosts Ishpeming Thursday.
