GLADSTONE - A Rapid River man was killed and an Escanaba man was injured in a two-vehicle accident that occurred at 1 a.m. Sunday.
Michigan State Police from the Gladstone Post were dispatched to investigate the crash. Police said U.S. 2 in the area of the crash was shut down for several hours until the scene could be cleared.
Killed in the crash was Ryan Robert-Raymond Harper, 23, of Rapid River. Injured in the crash was Ricky Dale Moulds, 57, of Escanaba.
Preliminary findings show that the vehicle driven by Harper was westbound on U.S. 2 near JJ.5 in Delta County's Nahma Township when it crossed the center line and was struck broadside by the vehicle, driven by Moulds, going eastbound.
Police said speed is believed to be a contributing factor in the crash.
Moulds was treated at the scene and transported to Marquette General Hospital by Rampart EMS. Harper was pronounced dead at the scene by the medical examiner's office and then transported to St. Francis Hospital by Tri-Star EMS.
Assisting at the scene were Garden, Nahma, Masonville Fire Departments, Rampart EMS and Tri-Star EMS, Delta County Sheriff's Department, and MSP St. Ignace Detachment.
The incident remains under investigation.
