Lucille Smokovitz

VULCAN - Lucille M. Smokovitz, 91, of Vulcan, died on Monday, Jan. 28, 2013, at Pinecrest Medical Care Facility in Powers.

She was born on Oct. 14, 1921, in Vulcan, daughter of the late John and Margaret (Ball) Moraska.

Lucille married Mike Smokovitz on June 15, 1940, in St. Barbara Catholic Church Church. He preceded her in death on Sept. 26, 2004.

Lucille attended Vulcan High School and later in life became a licensed practical nurse (LPN) after completing her education at Bay de Noc Community College. She was among the third class to graduate from the original LPN program. She worked as an LPN for 23 years, caring for residents of Pinecrest, until her retirement.

Lucille was active in the community. She served on the Norway Township Board Zoning Committee, was a member of the Michigan State University Extension, St. Barbara Catholic Church, the Altar Society, and the Daughter of Isabella.

Lucille leaves a legacy of hard work, frugality, and kindness. Her love for her family and friends will not be forgotten.

She is survived by her daughters, Anne Salzeider of Engadine, and Janet Prohaska of San Jose, Calif.; grandchildren, Toni (Bill) Chrabot of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., Jeffrey Salzeider of West Bloomfield, Dawn (Brian) Russell of Ponte Vedra Beach, Scott (Pavlina) Salzeider of Milford, Kim Poff of San Jose, and Connie Hart of San Jose; great-grandchildren, Sam, Eric, Emily and Nathan Salzeider, Ashley and Joseph Chrabot, Michael and Zachery Russell, Grace, Frank and Ivana Salzeider and Robert Hart; sisters, Elizabeth Stanchina of Norway and Veronica (Walter) Gunville of Vulcan; sisters-in-law, Genevieve Peterson of Niagara, Wis., Carol Moraska of Norway, Margaret Moraska of Vulcan, and Alma Moraska of Norway; and many nieces and nephews.

Lucille was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Frank Salzeider and brothers, Louis, Joseph, Paul and John Moraska.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at St. Barbara Catholic Church in Vulcan.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. at the church with Fr. Timothy Ekaitis officiating.

Interment will follow at the Norway Township Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made in Lucille's name to St. Barbara Catholic Church or St. Jude's Research.
