Richard Pardon

ESCANABA - Richard Joseph Pardon, 84, passed away peacefully at Christian Park Healthcare Center in Escanaba on Sunday, Feb. 3, 2013.

The son of the late Fortunato and Nora (Opolka) Pardon, Richard was born in Vulcan on Aug. 13, 1928. He graduated from Norway High School in 1947 and then attended Michigan College of Mining and Technology (now Michigan Technological University).

On Aug. 24, 1953, Richard married Betty Larson of Iron Mountain. He then served in the U.S. Army from 1953 until 1956, stationed in Germany. After returning to the States, Richard moved with Betty to Milwaukee and later graduated from the Milwaukee School of Engineering.

In 1959, Richard and Betty moved to Escanaba. Richard worked for Harnischfeger and later for LaPine Brothers Inc, in Gladstone. He bought the business in 1982, and ran it under the Pardon Inc. name until retiring in 1996.

Richard enjoyed spending time in the summer at their cottage on Hamilton Lake and in the fall at their hunting camp. He was happiest when working on one of his many projects, which ranged from houses, to clocks, to model engines, to toy boats for his grandchildren.

Richard is survived by Betty, his wife of nearly 60 years; one daughter, Lisa (John) Thomas of Gladstone; one son, James (Darla) Pardon of Gladstone; grandchildren, Michelle (Brian) Oswald of Grand Rapids, Kevin Pardon, Paul Thomas, Scott Pardon and Troy Pardon, all of Gladstone; brother, Melvin Pardon of Lakewood, Wis.; sister, Rena Altobelli of Escanaba; sister-in-law, Pat Pardon of Hartford, Wis.; sister-in-law, Donna Ohlsen of Iron Mountain; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by his brother, Ernest Pardon; sister-in-law, Jean Pordon; brother-in-law, John Altobelli; and brother-in-law, Harvey Ohlsen.

Richard's family will receive friends on Wednesday at Anderson Funeral Home in Escanaba from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern time (2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Central time).

Funeral services celebrating the life of Richard Pardon will follow Wednesday at 5 p.m. Eastern time (4 p.m. Central time) at the Anderson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Erik Heskin officiating. A luncheon will follow at Bethany Lutheran Church.

Burial will take place at the Norway Township Cemetery at a later date.

The Anderson Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.
