IRON RIVER - Lexi Gussert scored 20 of her game-high 32 points in the second half and Forest Park defeated West Iron County 61-39 in non-conference girls basketball Thursday at Charles Greenlund Gymnasium.

"Lexi keeps everyone involved," Forest Park Coach Jeff Syrjanen said. "It's hard to say that someone who has 32 points is unselfish but she is."

Kendra Campbell added 15 points (10 first half) and 11 rebounds for the Trojans, who held a 23-16 halftime lead.

"Kendra's scoring was a welcome sight," Syrjanen said of the junior's best game of the season. "Maria Stankewicz and Kelsi Hendrickson played tremendous defense and Sierra Robarge and Adel Isaacson did a good job on their shooters.

"Our minutes were shared with eight to nine people rotated through the game."

The Iron County rivals played to a 12-12 draw in the first quarter.

"That was a typical start for a Forest Park-West Iron game," Syrjanen said. "Both teams were going at it hard."

Emily Christensen's 16 points and 11 rebounds topped the Wykons.

"Christensen had a real nice game offensively and defensively," Dallavalle said.

Kylee Erickson, who volunteered to guard Gussert, chipped in 11.

"Lexi is something else," Wykons coach Mike Dallavalle said. "Kylee asked me in practice Monday if she could guard Lexi. I said 'she's all yours.'

"Kylee did a great job with obviously a lot of help."

Dallavalle said the 6-foot all-stater was held to seven points until late in the first half. Forest Park moved Gussert to the low post in the second half and the Trojans' outside shooting also clicked.

"Once the other girls hit outside shots there's not much you can do," Dallavalle said.

Forest Park moved out to a 13-point lead after three quarters.

"We were contesting most of their outside shots,"Dallavalle said. "But we were giving them second and third shots.

"I was happy with our intensity. Forest Park played good defense."

West Iron was outrebounded, 45-25, for the first time this season.

On Monday, Forest Park (16-1) hosts Iron Mountain and West Iron (6-9) travels to Hancock.

Becca McCole scored 13 points and Rachel Roose had 10 as Forest Park's jayvees outlasted West Iron 47-39 in overtime. Torri Harris-Hoogenboom led the Wykons with seven.
