CRYSTAL FALLS - An Iron River man has pleaded not guilty to charges alleging that he robbed a gas station in Caspian last month.
Michael Dean Beauchamp, 22, appeared in Iron County Trial Court on Monday for a preliminary examination.
Since Beauchamp and his attorney Geoffrey Lawrence elected to waive the preliminary examination, Judge C. Joseph Schwedler immediately bound Beauchamp over to the circuit court level.
Beauchamp then entered not guilty pleas to one felony count of unarmed robbery, one felony count of resisting and obstructing a police officer, and a newly-filed felony count of larceny in a building.
A pre-trial in the case has been scheduled for March 4.
If convicted, Beauchamp could face a maximum penalty of life in prison. He is listed as a habitual offender-fourth, which enhances the penalty of unarmed robbery from 15 years to life.
Beauchamp is accused of forcefully stealing beer and cigarettes from the clerk of the Citgo gas station in Caspian. The incident occurred on Jan. 27.
Iron County Sheriff Mark Valesano noted that Beauchamp was tackled and detained by two customers who were in the store at the time of the robbery. They held him until law enforcement officials arrived.
Beauchamp remains incarcerated in the Iron County Jail.
In other Iron County Trial Court action:
- Mackenzie Dove Phillips, 18, of Crystal Falls pleaded not guilty to felony charges of felonious assault and attempted witness intimidation. If convicted on both charges, Phillips faces a maximum penalty of six years in prison.
Phillips has been scheduled for a pre-trial on March 4.
According to the criminal complaint in the case, Phillips allegedly assaulted two victims with a pickup truck on Jan. 3 in Crystal Falls Township.
