CRYSTAL FALLS - A Baraga teen has accepted a plea deal on charges that stem from an October car chase that started in Iron River and spanned four Upper Peninsula counties.
Shad Kenneth Bryan, 18, pleaded guilty to one felony count of fleeing a police officer-third degree-vehicle code. An additional felony count of unlawful driving away of a motor vehicle was dismissed.
Bryan still faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison when he is sentenced in Iron County Trial Court on March 25.
According to troopers from the Iron Mountain post of the Michigan State Police, Bryan and a codefendant, 18-year-old Devin Charles Curtis of L'Anse, stole a 2011 Subaru Outback from Angeli's Central Market in Iron River on Oct. 28.
When troopers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle on U.S. 141 in Hematite Township, the vehicle would not stop.
The suspects then led law enforcement officials on a 65-mile chase from U.S. 141 in Iron and Baraga counties, to M-28 in Baraga, Houghton, and Ontonagon counties, to M-45 in Ontonagon County.
Troopers said that the driver lost control of the vehicle on M-45 near Gauthier Road in Ontonagon County. The suspects fled the scene on foot, but were apprehended the next morning.
Curtis failed to appear in court for his preliminary examination back in November. There is still a bench warrant out for his arrest.
In other Iron County Trial Court action:
- Bruce Allen Blough, 55, of Iron River pleaded not guilty to one felony count of assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder, one felony count of discharging a firearm in a building, and one misdemeanor count of domestic violence.
He will appear in Iron County Trial Court for a pre-trial on March 18.
The charges against Blough stem from a Jan. 15 incident in Iron River Township.
According to testimony given in court, Blough is accused of grabbing a female by the neck and pinning her down on a bed. When the victim left the room, Blough allegedly fired two shots from a 380 handgun.
