IRON MOUNTAIN - Iron Mountain's boys came up one pin shy in the U.P. High School Bowling Conference team finals at Recreation Lanes.
Format calls for six Baker games, three regular games and total pins wins. The Mountaineers claimed second - 26 pins behind Marquette at 1110 - after six Baker games.
"We put in a lot of time all year practicing our Baker games and it paid off," said Mountaineer coach Pete Tomassoni, noting a 185 average - 21 pins over average.
During the regular games, Marquette fell off the pace to finish fourth. Ishpeming put together a late run to surge ahead of the field.
The Mountaineers, without the services of second-leading bowler Odin Stevens (broken hand), fashioned a 3697. This included the Baker game set of 1110 and team games of 832, 881 and 874.
That series ended up one pin shy of Ishpeming's 3698. Coach Pete Flaminio commented on the number of single-pin spares missed by the Mountaineers.
Al Tomassoni's 582 series (226 game) led the Mountaineers, followed by Forrest Nelson, 535; Zack Black and Austin Etsel, 512, and Joe Kuder, 446. Anthony Cazzola contributed in the Baker games.
Mountaineers travel to Bay City's Monitor Lanes this weekend for MHSAA regional action. Team event will be held Friday and singles on Saturday.
