IRON MOUNTAIN - Richard Abraham's artwork will be on display at Bay West College today through April 5 along with "Joan Game's Recipes for Legacies" exhibit.

The public is invited to view the exhibits and meet Abraham at an artist's reception in his honor at Bay West on Thursday, Feb. 28 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. with refreshments and live music featuring Todd and Donna Sundstrom.

Richard Abraham, son of Dick and Jean Abraham, is an artist and instructor residing in Minneapolis. Minn.

He grew up in Iron Mountain, and continues to feel a "sense of place" that is reflected in his paintings: "I always look forward to going back to Michigan because I'll paint the places I grew up, places I've known my whole life. Somehow that gets into the painting. I always feel that the Michigan paintings touch people more."

He has worked to develop a personal style of painting within the meticulous framework of his craft. He demonstrates a profound sensitivity for wild and rural spaces.

He feels a real connection to the places that he paints, scouting his sites off the beaten track, selecting rural hide-a-ways to paint in Northern Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan.

It would be difficult not to be moved by Abraham's work.

His paintings brilliantly capture the nuances in nature's values, colors and forms while weaving a story about place. Many of the places in Abraham's paintings are just snippets of nature - "The Credit River," photo in painting above, is just a small section of the river and its bank - but through an expert sense of design, rhythm and tonality, Abraham injects drama and presence into this humble bit of nature.

Richard Abraham studied art at the University of Wisconsin at Green Bay and has trained in the technical craft of classical realist painting at the Altelier, the Bougie Studio and H&P Studios.

Abraham has participated in plein air events around the country including Laguna, California and Telluride, Colorado and in 2009 was awarded the Hiawatha Artist in Residence by the National Forest Service.

He has received numerous awards for his work. Abraham exhibits his work extensively and is represented in numerous private collections.
