IRON RIVER - West Iron County experienced a bittersweet night of basketball Tuesday.
The Wykons absorbed a 92-43 pasting from Ishpeming but found out they shared the West PAC boys basketball title after Calumet nipped Houghton at the buzzer Tuesday.
"They shot the ball really well and we didn't bother playing much defense," Wykons coach Dan Schive, said. "This was probably our worst defensive game of the year."
WIC only trailed 40-28 at halftime before Ishpeming (8-10) went wild with a 52-15 advantage in the second half, going on runs of 15-0, 14-0 and 12-0.
"This is the most points we scored since I came (to Ishpeming) four years ago," IHS coach John Tiziani said as his players made 58 percent from the field (39 of 67).
The scoring barrage was led by junior guard Bobby Zhulkie, who scored 33 points and made four steals of the Hematites' 13 steals. "It was just one of those games where everything clicked."
Austin Waara topped the Wykons with 14.
West Iron (13-7 overall, 6-2 West PAC) faces Iron Mountain in the Class C District 95 opener at 5:30 p.m. Monday at Norway.
Ishpeming defeated West Iron County in the junior varsity game.
"Kevin's team played their hearts out against one of the top jayvee teams in the U.P.," Schive said.
