The Dickinson County Cancer Unit Loan Closet, located at 1401 1/2 South Carpenter Ave. in Iron Mountain, has been serving the area since 2001.
In that time frame, we have helped over 2000 area residents, cancer and non cancer, with free loan of medical equipment and financial aid to help with prescription drugs and travel expenses for treatment for cancer related health problems. In the past two years we have seen a big increase in the need for our services.
Our local community, including businesses, organizations and citizens, continues to provide the wonderful support needed to continue this fine program.
As our client load continues to grow, there is a need for financial support for this program, which is a unique one. And I might add a rare one. There are not many organizations in the country, and maybe in the world like ours.
We are a non-profit, licensed organization run by dedicated volunteers with input from area professional people from different walks of life. Our expenses are very minimal. For every dollar we receive, approximately 98 cents goes back into the community to help our clients. A nice return for your donated monies.
Recently, our community has been rallying around us with great support, financial and in other ways with some unique fund raising events. The organizers put in a lot of hard work organizing these events, and we hope you will be generous in supporting them. We are very grateful for this support.
We are looking for new ways to help our clients, including new and different handicap equipment to help with their rehab. This takes funding. We only ask for your continued support.
I have said before, there are many fine non-profit organizations in our area, run by dedicated volunteers who desperately need financial support. When you consider giving to non-profit groups, please give a thought to keeping it local.
If you read this article, please spread the word of our services. We can be contacted by calling (906) 776-0966. We are open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and most Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
As a volunteer at the Loan Closet for about six years, I have learned what a wonderful, caring, sharing community we live in.
May God bless you all.
