Breitung Township Fire Department personnel battle a barn fire on Peterson Drive in Merriman Monday afternoon. Several animals perished in the blaze.
Breitung Township Fire Chief Jeff Iverson said North Breitung and East Kingsford Fire Stations were paged out at 2:55 p.m. to the fully-engulfed structure fire at W9093 Peterson Drive.
The fire was called in by Florence Dispatch to the Dickinson County Sheriff's Department.
Iverson said the barn housed small equipment, hogs, sheep, chickens, and cows.
"Lost were two sheep, one hog and much of the equipment," he said.
The property is owned by Emelie Fairchild. The Fairchild Farm is in Merriman.
Iverson believes the cause of the fire was spontaneous combustion from hay in the barn.
He said the insurance company will investigate the cause of the fire.
A damage estimate is not known. Iverson added no one was injured in the blaze.
Firefighters cleared the scene at 6:30 p.m.
Beacon Ambulance, Michigan State Police and We Energies assisted Breitung Township Fire Department at the scene.
