KINGSFORD - Alice A. Van Loon, 83, of Kingsford, formerly of Ludington, Mich., passed away Wednesday, April 3, 2013, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital, with family by her side.
She was born Oct. 23, 1929, in Ludington, daughter of the late Emil and Veronica (Negele) Hoch, where she grew up near Lake Michigan and spent most of her life.
She graduated from Ludington High School and worked as a telephone operator for several years.
ALICE VAN LOON
Alice married Derral Van Loon on June 2, 1951, in Ludington, after he returned from the Army. He preceded her in death on July 3, 2004. They spent 53 years in loving marriage and had three sons.
Alice was an avid and talented artist, showing her talents during high school and continuing with painting and crafts of lighthouses, birds and numerous nautical themes. She also enjoyed crafting driftwood and water soaked tree roots, transforming them into beautiful wall hangings and table centerpieces.
With her husband Derral, they shared a loving life at their home on Lake Michigan. Alice enjoyed walking on the beach nearly every day, looking to discover what treasures, rocks and gems the waves and wind had uncovered. She will be missed by many of the Buttersville Peninsula residents.
Alice is survived by three sons, David (Denise Check) Van Loon of Rhinelander, Wis., Dean (Susan) Van Loon of Vulcan, and Derral Van Loon Jr. of Garner, N.C.; one sister, Helen (Don) Albrecht of Irons, Mich.; one brother, Emil (Carol) Hoch Jr. of Baldwin, Mich.; five grandchildren, Bryce and Kimberly of Rhinelander, Christian and Lillian of Vulcan, and Jason Leggitt of Escanaba; and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the many wonderful staff members at the Evergreen Apartments and especially the Memory Care Unit for their love, friendship, and the special care they provided during Alice's stay. Both had special places in their hearts for each other.
Alice will be reunited with her husband, Derral at Lakeview Cemetery in Ludington and a celebration of both of their lives is to be scheduled this summer.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
