EAGLE RIVER, Wis. - A 46-year-old man was killed Sunday night in a snowmobile accident in Vilas County, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources reported.
Bureau of Law Enforcement DNR Conservation Warden and Snowmobile Safety Administrator Gary Eddy said the man died in a single-machine accident in the town of Phelps. The snowmobiler struck two snowbanks causing him and the machine to go airborne, Eddy said.
The victim was found with the snowmobile along the west shore of Lac Vieux Desert Lake. Speed may have been a contributing factor in the accident, which occurred about 6 p.m., Eddy said.
The accident remains under investigation and brings to 20 the total number of snowmobiler fatalities in Wisconsin this season, the DNR said.
