IRON MOUNTAIN - Iron Mountain High School boys track team, like most everybody, is looking forward to warmer weather and the start of the season.

"We can't wait to get on the track, off the roads and out of the gym," said Coach Dale Powell, his Mountaineers conducting pre-season practice in the gym. "The weather hasn't been cooperating early on, but hopefully things turn around soon."

Fourteen of this season's 24 Mountaineers participated last year.

Iron Mountain High School boys track coach Dale Powell watches Luke Zambon, left, and Brock Grenier run in the high school gym Tuesday.

"We have pretty good numbers," Powell said. "We have a nice mix of kids with some veterans and newcomers."

Powell looks for Dan Kulas to be competitive in the distance races, Luke Zambon in the jumping events and Zach Haber in throwing the shot and discus.

Zambon cleared 5-feet-10 to win the U.P. Division 1 high jump title last year. Kulas, a cross country standout, was a medalist in the 3200.

"We will be moving from Division 1 to Division 2 this year, which means we will be going against schools a little more our size," Powell said. "We are hoping this makes us a little more competitive."

Iron Mountain is scheduled to begin the season Thursday, April 18, at Norway.

CRYSTAL FALLS - Forest Park's track and field teams begin their season indoors at Marquette's Superior Dome April 18.

The girls squad lists 24 athletes including nine returners.

"I am very excited about the 2013 season," Trojans girls head coach Chandra Ziegler said. "We're looking stronger than ever. They've been working hard and getting their work done despite a snow covered track."

Ziegler said the girls have set big goals as individuals and as a team.

"As a coach, I know they are capable of anything they set their minds to," she said. "I'm excited to see where all the first year athletes will shine and see what we will accomplish as a team. In the end, it's about working together, giving our all, and having fun."

Boys head coach Erich Ziegler shows a roster of 27 athletes, with 15 previous letter winners.

"We are looking forward to the season," Erich Ziegler said. "We graduated a solid group of athletes last year, so this team is working hard and will need to step up. I have a good group of young men who are ready to try and uphold the goals of our program."

Niagara

NIAGARA, Wis. - Two time state qualifier Jenna Carlton highlights the list of returning athletes to Niagara High School's track and field team this spring.

Carlton, a middle/distance runner, leads the Lady Badgers group. She went to the state meet for the 800 last season.

"We have a good mix of athletes and grade levels," Badgers head coach Scott Trevillian said of his girls squad.

Other key returners to the girls team include Kaitlyn Lundin (shot/disc) and Shanna Nordell (sprints). Trevillian also expects seniors Rachel Broullire and Melinda MacDonald to be major contributors.

"I expect us to be very competitive in running and throwing events," Trevillian said. "Our biggest struggles will come from consistent showings in field events. We will be training some younger athletes. I expect we will be competitive if we stay healthy."

Niagara's boys team will have to overcome the loss of a large senior group from a year ago, many of whom were consistent sectional qualifiers.

Trevillian points the trio of Jordan Zawada (sprints), Joey Swanson (middle distance) and Nate Moll (various events) to lead the Badger boys.

"Our biggest weakness is that we only return four varsity letter winners," Trevillian said. "Numbers will make it difficult to compete as team awards, but individually we should be competitive."

Like all area teams, outdoor practice time has been severely limited.

"We are working as hard as we can despite not being able to use the track because of weather," Trevillian said. "We keep improving daily and look forward to a good year with a good bunch of kids."

Niagara is scheduled to compete at Crivitz Tuesday.
