IRON MOUNTAIN - An Iron Mountain family was enjoying a post-race celebration several blocks from the finish line of the Boston Marathon when Monday's deadly explosions hit.
Iron Mountain High School graduate Brendan Pancheri ran in the Boston Marathon.
Scott Pancheri said his son, Brendan Pancheri, had finished the race about an hour earlier.
The family first learned of the blasts from TV news reports while gathering in the Legal Sea Foods restaurant.
"Security heightened and sadness took over," Scott Pancheri said.
People who were closer to the explosions began arriving and shared more information, he said.
"Just horrific," he said. "We're kind of re-gathering our thoughts here and praying for those who were lost."
Pancheri and his wife, Brenda, and other family members were preparing to board a flight out of Boston this morning.
Because public transit was shut down after the attacks, the family walked some three miles to reach the house boat where they were staying.
With 27,000 runners on hand, Pancheri said the scene was "pretty crazy" and nerves were frayed.
Brendan Pancheri, a 2000 graduate of Iron Mountain High School, ran his first Boston Marathon in 2011.
He finished Monday's race in 3:11:47.
