Kingsford, Iron Mountain taste fresh air and victory

April 26, 2013
The Daily News

GLADSTONE - Kingsford's boys tennis team, in its delayed season debut, took down Gladstone 7-1 here Thursday.

"It was a good start for our kids," Flivvers coach Mark Shanks said. "We looked good, like we've been playing tennis. The work in the gym paid off."

Aaron Parmet outlasted Caleb Harrington in No. 1 singles 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 to post the Braves' lone win. The match provided a glimpse of two of the U.P.'s top singles players in an early-season clash.

"That was the match of the day," Shanks said. "Aaron has been out more this spring and got this one. They have always battled close. They'll get several more chances to go at each other."

Kingsford, still solidifying its lineup, comfortably took the remaining three singles matches and pulled off a sweep in doubles.

"Gladstone is back in a rebuilding mode," Shanks said.

The Flivvers (1-0) play four times next week beginning with a home match against Negaunee on Monday. A match at Menominee has been added for next Friday.

WIC a contender

IRON RIVER - West Iron County, featuring a lineup sprinkled with U.P. award winners, expects to be a contender this season.

"Our team will be competitive this season as we are returning an experienced squad," said Coach Joe Serbentas, assisted by John Spelgatti. "There will be some juggling of the lineup early in the season to find the right combinations for doubles."

Although U.P. No. 2 singles runner-up Caleb Pellizzer has graduated, the Wykons return U.P. singles champs Austin Waara (No. 1) and Alex Ralston (No. 4) along with second-place Adam Newby (No. 3).

There's also a strong doubles base with Sean Gustafson-Tylor Capadagli (No. 2) and Joey Pisoni-Max Maloney (No. 4), both second in the 2012 U.P. tournament.

"Everyone will struggle for consistency early in the season due to the shortened time outdoors," Serbentas said. "The boys are chomping at the bit to play and get outside to practice.

"As a team we know there are several quality squads out there, and it will take hard work and determination to earn a U.P. championship."

West Iron is scheduled to host Iron Mountain on Tuesday. Roster follows (* indicates letterwinner):

SENIOR - Austin Waara*, Sean Gustafson*, Alex Ralston*. JUNIOR - Adam Newby*, Aren Newby*, Ryan Rogers*, Andrew Peterson*, Connor O'Donnell*, Tylor Capadagli*, Joey Pisoni*.
