WAKEFIELD - A 20-year-old murder suspect was taken into custody without incident in Ironwood Township, according to state police at the Wakefield post.
Troopers were advised Friday that a warrant for first degree murder had been issued out of Baton Rouge, La., for an Ironwood Township native.
Accompanied by U.S. marshals, troopers located the subject at an Ironwood Township residence. He was taken into custody and lodged at the Ontonagon County jail, pending extradition.
Ironwood Public Safety and the Ontonagon County Sheriff's Department assisted.
According to The Advocate newspaper of Baton Rouge, Mason Chiapuzio was arrested in connection with the Baton Rouge fatal shooting of Brandon Harris, 29, on April 15, 2012.
Brandon Harris' body was found in the 1400 block of Sharlo Avenue in Tigerland, an area of Baton Rouge.
Harris was shot multiple times in a driveway. Robbery appears to have been a motive in the shooting because Harris' pockets had been emptied.
East Baton Rouge Parish District Attorney Hillar Moore III told The Advocate U.S. marshals will hold Chiapuzio while his office files the extradition paperwork.
There is a chance that Chiapuzio would fight extradition and in that case, an extradition hearing would be held.
According to police records, Harris was arrested in 2001 for possession of ecstasy, WBRZ-TV of Baton Rouge said.
