NORWAY - Prior to last week, the North Dickinson boys may have been wondering when Mother Nature would finally cooperate and provide them with an opportunity to get a track meet under their belts.

Forest Park’s Chris Hilberg cleared 5-feet-8 to win the Norway Invitational high jump Monday at Ronberg Field.

The Nordics have since made up for lost time.

North Dickinson, which opened by winning Niagara Invitational on April 30, followed that up with a victory in Monday's Norway Invitational with 161 1/2 points.

"The guys competed well," said Nordics' coach Mike Lindholm. "Right now, the guys are pretty excited and they're fun to coach. Everybody is behind at this point because of the (extended cold) weather. But I think the times will come down."

Runner-up North Central scored 99 points on Monday and defending champ Niagara took third this time with 74.

The Forest Park girls were crowned champions with 147 1/2 points, followed by Niagara 120 and North Dickinson 81.

"We have a real strong team this year and everybody played a part," said Forest Park girls' coach Chandra Ziegler. "I think this is a confidence builder heading into the bigger meets coming up. This was only our third meet. We're still trying to find spots for some kids."

North Dickinson's boys were by junior Tim Hruska, who won the 110-meter hurdles in 16.49 seconds, 300 hurdles (44.23) and 100 dash (11.78) and placed second in the 200 in 24 seconds flat. Niagara's Jordan Zawada won the 200 (23.78) on this sunny and warm day.

"I've been practicing on getting lower to the hurdles, and I think did real well in the 300s," said Hruska. "I didn't get as good a start as usual the 100 (dash). I really didn't know how the 200 would go. I haven't practiced for the 200 at all."

Senior Cody Berg provided the Nordics with firsts in long jump at 18 feet, 10 inches and shot put (42-11), placed third in the 400 (55.48) and shared third with North Central freshman Caleb Martin in high jump (5-4).

North Central did take any firsts, but collected six seconds. The Jets were led by junior Eric Prestay, who was runner-up in shot put (39-10 3/4) and discus (113-5).

"I was happy with the boys today," said Jets' coach Jerry Root. "I think the key was balance today. We had some second places. Our times weren't too shabby either. We were also up against some good teams up here."

Besides his victory in the 200, Zawada helped the Badgers win the 800 and 1600 relays.

Florence's John Lemanski won the 800 (2:10.54) and Dan Jones took the 3200 (11:34.02), both of whom helped the Bobcats win the 3200 relay.

The Forest Park girls were led by junior Mary Grandahl, who won the 100 (13.7) and helped the Trojans take both sprint relays and place second in the 1600.

They also placed 1-2 in the 300 hurdles and 200. Georgie Dohl won the hurdles in 53.48, with Kendra Campbell at 56.05. Libby Shamion took the 200 (30.13), followed by Caitlin Dorton (30.53).

Niagara senior Jenna Carlton copped the 800 (2:40.36) and 1600 (6:04.7), anchored the winning 1600 relay and placed third in long jump (13-8).

"It was nice running in the heat for a change," said Carlton, who will join the U.S. Navy in August. "I always like to get out fast because I find a push myself more when I'm in front. I don't want to take a chance on boxed in. We've missed a lot of meets because of the weather. My times are a little behind last year."
