IRON MOUNTAIN - An Illinois man was killed when he became trapped in a 12-foot deep well in northern Dickinson County Wednesday.

Police have identified the victim as James Ennis, 77, of Orland Park, Ill.

State Police troopers from the Iron Mountain Post responded to a camp in Waucedah Township at approximately 1:49 p.m. Wednesday for a man that was trapped in a 12-foot deep well.

Police said Ennis had climbed down into the well to make repairs.

A friend lowered dry ice into the well to be used to repair the well. The dry ice reacted and removed the oxygen from the bottom of the well.

Ennis lost consciousness while attempting to climb out, police said.

The friend contacted the Dickinson County 911 Dispatch Center via cell phone.

Rescue personnel arrived on scene and donned a self-contained breathing apparatus to enter the well, and Ennis was removed.

CPR was performed but Ennis could not be revived, police said.

Also responding to the scene were the Dickinson County Sheriff's Office, Beacon Ambulance, Nordic Ambulance, Tri-City Rescue, Felch Township Fire Department and North Breitung Fire Department.
