IRON MOUNTAIN - The Dickinson County Board of Commissioners on Monday formally approved the hiring of Nicole Frost as the county's new controller-administrator, effective June 10.

Frost is the current administrator in downstate Gratiot County. Her starting salary in Dickinson County will be $70,189 annually.

"She had all the qualifications we desired - and three and a half years of experience (as a county administrator)," said Henry Wender, county board chairman. "She loves the U.P.," Wender added. "I think that's what got her here."

Kay Pascoe, who is retiring as controller-administrator next month, said she believes the board has made a good choice.

Board members said the fact that Pascoe remains "a phone call away" will ease the transition.

In other action, the county board:

- Rescheduled its next regular meeting to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, to avoid a conflict with Memorial Day.

- Heard Commissioner Joe Stevens say he is encouraged that state lawmakers are looking into the property tax assessment appeals being filed by "big box" stores, including Home Depot in Breitung Township. If the assessment declines are allowed to stand, the loss in local and county government revenues will pose serious budgeting problems, he said.

- Authorized the purchase of a 30 horsepower, 60-inch deck commercial mower for Ford Airport from Hall's True Value of Norway at cost of $4,800. Hall's submitted the lowest quoted price from among three local suppliers. The other offers came from Rocconi Ace Hardware of Iron Mountain and Country Side Lawn & Sport Inc. of Niagara, Wis.

- Released the budgeted 2013 appropriation to the Hamilton Lakes Association for aquatic nuisance control (Lake Mary) in the amount of $2,500.
