This sounds like a good news-bad news situation for new Westwood High School football coach John Jessen.

The 2000 Kingsford High School graduate was recently promoted from Patriots assistant to head coach. That's the good news.

Now, for possibly the bad news, Jessen and his Patriots must deal with Coach Chris Hofer and his formidable Kingsford Flivvers during the third week of the season.

However, Jessen sees all good in the situation.

"Chris Hofer is a class act and Kingsford has a fantastic football atmosphere," said Jessen, who learned of the Kingsford game after taking the job. "I think this could be a very positive experience for our kids, though.

"I believe that playing a tough school like Kingsford will be a good test as we roll into our challenging Mid-Pen Conference schedule."

Jessen, a guard for the Flivvers, "was very dedicated and a very hard worker," according to Hofer. "A smart, tough player, too."

Kingsford last played Westwood in 1998. Kingsford nearly landed a Detroit area power for the football schedule until Westwood came through.
