Donald Scholke

IRON MOUNTAIN - Donald J. Scholke, 81, of Iron Mountain, passed away on Wednesday, May 22, 2013, at ManorCare Health Services in Kingsford.

He was born Aug. 30, 1931, in Iron Mountain, son of the late Robert and Victoria (Troyan) Scholke.

Don graduated from Iron Mountain High School in 1951, and joined the U.S. Navy. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving four years as a ship's serviceman aboard the USS Baltimore and the USS Mississippi. Following his service to his country, he attended technical school in Hartford, Conn.

Don married Sharon (Lanpher) on April 11, 1953, at St. Maurice Church in New Britain, Conn.

Don worked as a self-employed barber for 40 years in Iron Mountain.

He was a member of St. Mary and St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, the Elks Lodge and the American Legion Post 50. He was a past member of Pine Grove Country Club, Oakcrest Golf Club and UCT. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, and spending time with family and friends.

Don is survived by his wife of 60 years, Sharon; sons, John (Jan) of Sheboygan, Wis., and Michael (Delores) of Iron Mountain; daughters, Donna (Joseph) Carson of Kalkaska, Mich., Diane (Scott) Magnuson of Ishpeming, Mich., and Suzanne Scholke of San Diego; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Don was preceded in death by a brother, Robert (Kathleen) Scholke and a sister, Vivian (George) Kovacich.

Visitation will take place on Saturday from noon to 1 p.m. at St. Mary and St. Joseph Catholic Church.

A memorial Mass will follow Saturday at 1 p.m. at the church. Fr. Dan Zaloga and Fr. Paul Nomellini will concelebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Iron Mountain Cemetery Park.

The family requests that flowers be omitted.
