Iron Mountain’s Dan Kulas runs the 3200-meter relay during Thursday’s Mid-Peninsula Conference track and field finals at Norway High School. Kulas anchored the Mountaineers to second place. He also swept the distance races.

"Again, I'm very proud of my team," Negaunee coach Vickie Paupore said. "They knew we were going to have our hands full with Manistique. They really have an excellent team, so we talked about how we have to go hard in every event."

The Miners totaled 158 points to the Emeralds' 134. Gwinn (67), Westwood (61), Ishpeming (46), Iron Mountain (33) and Norway (28) completed the final standings.

"We had some girls who couldn't make it here today, so others had to step up," Paupore said. "The girls really gutted it out today and helped their teammates when they needed to. I was super proud of that."

Veale repeated as MPC champ in the 100 hurdles (16.18) and 300 hurdles (48.81) while adding conference titles in the 100 (12.81) and 200 (27.75).

"Today was good," Veale said. "I feel like I'm in a lot better shape now that the season is coming to an end. I'm hoping to run faster times at U.P.s, but overall it was a good day."

Veale said her 200 time was among her best of the season.

"It's awesome to watch her run," Paupore said. "I'm so going to miss her. I was really happy to see her in her last conference meet to win all four events."

The Miners also got firsts from Ashley Tresedder in the 400 (1:04.46) and Aubri Romback in the discus (86-02), while claiming victory in the mile relay.

"I hope we have a great showing at U.P.s," Paupore said. "Marquette is going to be tough. They are the team to beat for sure. One thing I know about my team is they are going to give it they're all. Win or lose, I'm always proud because they work so hard."

Holly Blowers led second-place Manistique with wins in the 800 (2:30.43), 1600 (5:39.38) and 3200 (12:42.75).

Host Norway picked up a win from Alexi Kallenbach in the high jump (4-10). Iron Mountain's Abby Gerhard was runner-up in the 800, and teammate Haley LaFleur posted thirds in the 100 and 400.

Manistique turned the tables on Negaunee to capture the boys title, scoring 159 points to the Miners' 130.

"We were a little nervous about Negaunee because they beat us last year by two points," Manistique boys' coach Mary Lou Lund said. "Our field events stepped up when they needed to, all the kids stepped up, really came together as a team."

Ishpeming finished third with 95 points followed by Iron Mountain (67), Westwood (43), Gwinn (22) and Norway (8).

Kenner Broullire posted two wins for the Emeralds, including a Manistique school record with his 10.94 win in the 100.

Bryson Lawrence added a win in the 800 (2:09.50) for the Emeralds, and Ryan Ramey was first in the 200 (23.37). Jared Edwards (114-04) and Tyler Kangas (114-01) went first and second in the discus.

"They pulled together," Lund said. "They weren't coming out of here losing today."

Dan Kulas easily swept the distance events for Iron Mountain, winning the 1600 in 4:45.81 and the 3200 with a personal best 10:22.87.

"I felt good today," Kulas said. "I'm excited for the U.P.s. I'm feeling great, and I hope I can win both."

Iron Mountain's Luke Zambon tuned up for his U.P. high jump title defense with a victory at 6-0. He set the Mountaineers school record at 6-4 earlier this season, but was second to Newberry's James Sutton at last week's regional.

"I've got some tough competition from Newberry at 6-7," Zambon said. "He's really good. I'm going to train this week and try my hardest at the finals."

Grant Merrill scored for Norway with a fourth in the shot put and a fifth in the discus.
