Lawnmower accident kills Norway man

IRON MOUNTAIN - A Norway Township man is dead after the riding lawnmower he was operating flipped over off a river bank edge.

State police troopers from the Iron Mountain post responded at approximately 4:15 p.m. Wednesday to a residence in Norway Township for a 911 call of a subject trapped under a mower in the river.

Melvin Miner, 71, died when the riding lawnmower he was operating slid off the river bank edge and flipped over. Police said Miner became pinned under the mower in approximately two feet of water.

Lifesaving measures were performed, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

State police were assisted by Norway Police Department, Dickinson County Sheriff's Department, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Norway Fire Department, North Alert, and Beacon Ambulance.
