Menominee's Tyler Harmon and Paiton Plutchak turned in a couple never-say-quit performances to reach today's U.P. Track & Field Finals at Flivver Field.

In the Division 1 regionals at Escanaba, Harmon lost his shoe after clearing the first hurdle in the 110-meter race. He claimed second in 16.31.

"Just to qualify after losing a shoe is quite an accomplishment," Maroons coach Greg Langlois told Tom (Richie) Keaser of The EagleHerald.

Plutchak, a freshman, also overcame some problems in the high hurdles. She turned her ankle and fell to the track after the second hurdle. She got up to snag the final regional spot in 18.17.

"To finish fourth in the 100 hurdles after falling down, that's crazy," Maroons coach Scott Melchoir said.

Clinton Shepherd set a world record by riding the Ferris wheel at Chicago's Navy Pier for 48 hours eight minutes 25 seconds.

Noted comedy writer Jim Barach: "He said it was like a typical Cubs season. There were highs, there were lows and at the end it always finishes at the bottom."

Noway's Oak Crest Golf Course will host the 2018 U.P. Golf Association Men's Championships.

Gaastra's own Dale Ward, UPGA secretary-treasurer, reports the U.P. tourney will be staged at Manistique this summer; Gladstone, 2014; Marinette, 2015; Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., 2016, and Ishpeming, 2017.

Ishpeming's Wawonowin Golf Course is the U.P. women's site in July ...
