Michael Paul of Grand Rapids plays at the Tailings disc golf course in Iron River. The course was recently closed for about a month after a sinkhole opened up near the number two basket. Now that the hole is filled in, the course has re-opened.

Now that the hole has been filled, the course has been declared safe and open for use.

Iron County Chamber of Commerce Director Bob Black said that resident Louis Goldbach of General Concrete recently donated time and material to fill the sinkhole.

He also discovered that the hole had been filled in once before.

"It wasn't that deep, maybe 15 to 20 feet," Black explained. "We used better material this time, actual mining material, and he (Goldbach) did a really awesome job."

The Tailings disc golf course is built above and around the former Riverton Mine, which operated from 1882 to 1931.

Although there are several sinkholes to the old mine throughout the area, they are all fenced off.

Black said that getting the course re-opened will only help Iron River's tourism.

"Disc golf is really growing," he added. "A lot of people come here because of the course."

The Tailings is an 18-basket, par 72 disc golf course that was constructed in 2010. It runs along the Apple Blossom Trail and the Iron River.

Disc golf players stand at a tee and try to throw a disc into a metal basket. Discs are weighted around the perimeter, and different discs are used for putting, mid-length throws, and distance throws.

There is no charge to use the course. However, players must bring their own discs.

Black noted that each year, the Tailings hosts a disc golf tournament that consistently attracts participants from all over the Midwest.

This year's tournament will held on Saturday, June 29, at 9 a.m.

Registration forms are available from the Iron County Chamber of Commerce. There is a $35 fee to register.
