CRYSTAL FALLS - An Iron County Jail inmate is facing escaping lawful custody charges after he attempted to flee police on Tuesday while being treated at a local hospital.

Deputies said that they had brought the 22-year-old Iron River man from the jail to Northstar Hospital in Iron River for medical attention.

While being treated, the man escaped custody and fled on foot, said deputies.

According to deputies, the man ran to nearby Ice Lake and attempted to swim away. He then swam back to shore and ran away again.

Troopers and a canine unit from the Michigan State Police joined the pursuit.

They found the man lying down in tall brush about one hour later. He was only a short distance from where he was last seen.

Deputies said that the man was taken into custody without incident.

His name is being withheld pending arraignment in Iron County Trial Court, deputies added.
