Adopt a Shelter Cat Month

June 14, 2013
The Daily News

EDITOR:

There are many cats and kittens in the shelter, that need a good home where they are loved and cared for.

Cats do not need to be walked as dogs do and they are very intelligent. If you are considering adopting a kitten, it is a good idea to adopt two so they are not lonely and they will not be so afraid.

When you take a cat or a kitten home they may hide for days. Remember this is all new to them. They have been in a cage for most of the day.

They need to explore and feel safe in their new home. Some adapt quickly when they are adopted together, others take more time.

Put yourself in their place, and you will find it takes time to adapt to new surroundings. Especially if you already have one cat and are introducing a new one.

Make sure they will be close in age and this will work out better for them.

Picture yourself with a new room mate. There are always adjustments.

So please give them time to adapt. Do not give them a day or two, that is not fair to the animal.

You can see the cats/kittens in Friday night Daily News, on Facebook under the shelter site, or on the Almost Home Animal Shelter web site.

Take time to look at each. Remember, all animals have different personalities. Some are curious, some want to sit on your lap, some are playful, and some just like to chill out with you on the couch.

Remember black cats are the last to be adopted.

We do not know why. We hope it not due to superstitions

Black cats and kittens are smooth and sleek, have beautiful eyes, and are every bit as loving as a gray, a calico, or a tortie.

So since June is Adopt a Shelter Cat Month, consider adopting a black or a black and white cat. There are at least eight or nine in the shelter and they are beautiful.

Can you find it in your heart to take the time to check these cats out? Look how long some of them have been in the shelter. It almost breaks my heart to see when they reach their little paws out to you, wanting you to take them home and love them.

Please consider going to the shelter and seeing them.

Ask shelter staff to assist you, ask about their stories.

There is a pair named Wender and Wanda. Little Diane has been there quite awhile. Savanna has a sad story and Oakley and Daisy are her kittens.

Can you save a life and maybe adopt a black or a black and white?

Change things. Black cats are very adoptable and very loving. Isn't it time you checked them out?

I sure hope so. They are counting on you.
