"A combination of incredible timing, the correct choice of lens and a very clean background made this image the best of Division 1 in the sports category," the contest judges said.
The Division 1 category is for newspapers with a daily circulation under 15,000.
In the 2012 Michigan Press Association Better Newspaper Contest, Daily News Sports Editor Ron Deuter received honorable mention in Sports Writing for "Trojans' Turn," a story on the Forest Park girls basketball team's regional championship win.
A Good News Award, sponsored by religious leaders in the Upper Peninsula, was presented to Linda Lobeck of The Daily News for her feature story, "Kingsford woman helps clothe needy children around the globe."
The story, published in the newspaper's Northern Profiles section last November, told of Sally Karttunen and other women who make pillowcase dresses to send to children in Third World countries.
