VULCAN - Henry J. Bray, 92, of Vulcan, died Thursday, June 27, 2013, at Pinecrest Medical Care Facility in Powers after being hospitalized at the Oscar G. Johnson V.A. Medical Care Facility in Iron Mountain back in December.
He was born on July 14, 1920, in Vulcan, the son of the late Joseph and Mary (Masty) Bray.
Henry served his country honorably in World War II, surviving serious injuries that left him without the use of his right arm. He was a technical sergeant in Company B 363rd Infantry of the 91st Division for the U.S. Army.
Henry fought in Italy and North Africa receiving the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster, Bronze Star Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, 3 Bronze Service Stars, European-African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon and World War II Victory Ribbon, Combat Infantry Badge and Good Conduct Medal.
He worked for both the Department of Natural Resources and the V.A. Medical Center and served as Norway Township supervisor and assessor. He also was on the Dickinson County Board of Supervisors in the late 1950s and early 60s.
Henry enjoyed hunting, trout and ice fishing, trapping and a few good drinks now and then with friends and family.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years Rose (Sartori) Bray; sons Steve Bray of Vulcan, Sam (Laurie) Bray of Waucedah Township, Sid (Margaret) Bray of Vulcan and Peter Bray of Loretto; grandchildren Terri (Joe) Bal of Norway; Travis (Rebecca) Bray of Birmingham, Leann Bray of Waucedah Township, Rachel Bray of Hopkins, Minn., Wyatt Bray of Vulcan and Isaac Bray of Vulcan; great-grandchildren, Stevie Ann Schultz and Fionna Bray; brother Florian (Pat) Bray of Kingsford; sister Frances Menapace of Norway; and several nieces and nephews.
Henry was preceded in death by his son, Stanley Bray; brothers, Albert and John Bray; and sisters, Ann Schwei and Catherine Tinetti.
Funeral services will be held for Henry at a later date.
Interment will be held at the Norway Township Cemetery.
