CRYSTAL FALLS - Steady morning rain showers didn't deter nearly 150 people from taking part in the annual Run Your Bass Off (10K) and Half Bass (3.6 miles), starting and ending at Runkle Lake Park Sunday.
"It doesn't quite get you motivated to run hard, but it wasn't that bad once you were racing," 10K race winner Mike Heidke of Neenah, Wis., said of the conditions.
Taking a side trip from a vacation in Eagle River, Wis., Heidke completed the Bass Run in 36 minutes, 30 seconds, a pace of 5:53 per mile.
Heidke, running in the 30-39 age group, wasn't a 'Bass' rookie, but it was his first return here since the late 1990s when he worked as an intern at the Quinnesec mill.
"I didn't really remember it," he said, mentioning that he is in training for the Fox Cities Marathon held in Appleton, Wis., in September. "It was really hilly. I knew there was the big hill in the first part, I just didn't remember how big it was. It was really hilly in the first 5k. Then it wasn't too bad."
Bass Run participants exit Runkle Lake Park onto M-69, climbing a daunting hill west toward town before breaking off to the north on Second Street.
Iron Mountain's Sara Trevillian took first in the women's division with a time of 43 minutes, good for eighth overall.
Half Bass runners left Runkle Lake to the northwest, making a loop that had them heading back east down M-69 before cutting back into the park. The hills for those runners came during the middle portion of the race.
Menominee's Mark Jasper won the Half Bass in 20:22, averaging a 5:39 mile time. Rachel King of St. Michael, Minn., was the top female at 23:36, which was 10th overall.
The Top 10 finishers by gender for each race are listed in the scoreboard section on page 2-B. Full results are available at www.SuperiorTiming.com.
